We Hate Yard Work
Spence: I detest working in the yard. It's a waste of time, painful to your muscles and exposes you to elements like sun and bugs. When I was a teenager, my father and I had a discussion about how I hate working out-of-doors. He worked us on the property building fire lines, mowing a three-acre orchard, clearing brush and you name it. Painful, all of it. His suggestion of me taking business classes in high school paid off in the rest of my life. It was my plan to move away from the country and never hold a hoe, rake, shovel, McLeod, Pulaski, pick-axe or post hole digger in my hands ever again. I wanted to live in an apartment above a bookstore and spend my free time in coffee houses, movie theaters, concert halls and antique stores. I got away with it for over thirty years. Then, I met Kate. Now, we live in a house. With a yard. And, that alone is worth it.
Kate--Oh Brother. I hate yard work too....that's why we have a yard service that comes every week to mow the lawn. I buck up and weed the small landscaped front yard. It's hardly a suburban jungle, Spence. If the Horsetails (or whatever they are called) didn't exist you'd have to weed maybe once a month. Life is too short to tend the yard when you can hire someone else to do it.
